Rabbit Grooming 101: How to Trim Nails and Brush Fur

Rabbits are clean animals, but they need your help. Unlike cats, rabbits cannot vomit hairballs. If they swallow too much fur while grooming themselves, it causes a deadly blockage.
Regular grooming isn't just about beauty; it is about survival. You need a basic rabbit grooming kit and a little patience.
1. Brushing (The Hairball Prevention)
Rabbits molt (shed) heavily every 3 months.
-
Tool: A slicker brush or a rubber grooming glove.
-
Technique: Brush gently down the back. If you see tufts of loose fur sticking out, pluck them gently with your fingers.
-
Frequency: Once a week normally; daily during shedding season.
2. Nail Trimming (The Scratch Prevention)
Long nails can get caught in carpets and rip out, causing bleeding.
-
Tool: Small animal nail clippers (do not use human ones, they crush the nail).
-
The "Burrito" Method: Wrap your rabbit in a towel (like a burrito) so only one foot sticks out. This keeps them calm and stops them from kicking.
-
The Cut: Clip only the white tip. Avoid the pink "quick" (blood vessel).
Summary
Grooming is a great bonding time. Keep their coat light and their nails short for a happy, healthy bunny.
