How to Potty Train a Kitten in an Apartment in 3 Days

You’ve just brought home a tiny, adorable ball of fur. But before you can enjoy the cuddles, you have one urgent mission: Litter training.

In a spacious village home, a kitten might go outside. But in a 3rd-floor apartment in Dhaka, they need to learn exactly where the bathroom is—and fast. The good news? Cats are naturally clean animals. With the right method, litter training a kitten can be done in just a weekend.

The Setup: Location is Everything

Before you start, choose the right spot.

  • Quiet & Accessible: Do not put the box next to the washing machine or in a high-traffic hallway. A corner of a guest bathroom or a balcony (if enclosed and safe) is ideal.

  • The Right Box: For a small kitten, use a shallow tray. If the walls are too high, they won't be able to climb in.

The 3-Day Method

Day 1: Confinement & Introduction

Do not give the kitten run of the whole house yet.

  • Keep them in one room (like your bedroom or a spare room) with their food, water, and litter box.

  • The Trigger: Immediately after they eat or wake up from a nap, gently place them in the litter box.

  • The Action: Take their front paw and gently scratch the sand. This triggers their instinct to dig.

Day 2: Observation & Positive Reinforcement

  • Watch for signs: sniffing corners, scratching the floor, or squatting.

  • If you see this, scoop them up immediately and put them in the box.

  • Reward: When they successfully use the box, give them a tiny treat or lots of praise. Never punish them for accidents; it only creates fear.

Day 3: Expanding Territory

  • If they have used the box consistently for 48 hours, open the door.

  • Let them explore the rest of the apartment, but leave the door to their "safe room" open so they can run back to the box when nature calls.

Troubleshooting

If your kitten poops on the floor, move the poop into the litter box and leave it there for a few hours. The scent will tell the kitten, "Ah, this is the place where this goes."

Litter training a kitten is mostly about patience. Stick to the routine, and your apartment will stay clean and odor-free.
