How to Stop Your Dog From Eating "Human Food" (Training Guide)

It’s lunch time. You sit down to eat your beef curry, and suddenly, a wet nose is nudging your leg. Those puppy eyes are begging for a bite.
In Bangladesh, we love sharing food with family, and pets are family. But feeding your dog from the table is a dangerous habit.
Here is a dog feeding guide on why you must stop this and how to do it.
The Dangers of Deshi Food
Our food is delicious, but dangerous for dogs:
-
Onions & Garlic: Found in almost every curry. These are toxic to dogs and cause anemia.
-
Spices/Chili: Can cause severe gastritis and vomiting.
-
Cooked Bones: Beef or Chicken bones can splinter and puncture their stomach.
How to Stop the Begging
-
The "Place" Command: Teach your dog to go to their bed/mat when humans are eating.
-
Ignore Them: If they whine, do not look at them. If you give in once, they will beg forever.
-
Feed Them First: Feed the dog their dinner before you sit down to eat yours. A full dog is less likely to beg.
Safe "Human" Snacks
If you must treat them, stick to safe, plain foods:
-
Slices of raw carrot.
-
Plain boiled chicken (no salt/spice).
-
Apple slices (no seeds).
Summary
Love your dog by keeping their bowl full of dog food, and your plate for yourself.
